Accident at Römerberg-Berghausen station

Senior misses exit and falls next to tracks – Train driver alerts rescue services

At Römerberg-Berghausen station (Rhein-Pfalz district), a senior woman fell next to the tracks and was only discovered by a train driver early in the morning. The train driver found the woman just after 6 a.m. in the green strip next to the tracks and immediately alerted the emergency services.

When paramedics and an emergency doctor arrived, the woman was, according to the Kaiserslautern Federal Police Inspectorate, awake and responsive. She was then taken to a hospital. There is currently no confirmed information about her further state of health.

How the fall happened according to current findings

According to the Federal Police, the senior had previously missed her exit from the train in Speyer. She then got off in Römerberg-Berghausen and tried to walk back to Speyer along the tracks. In this area, she reportedly fell into the green strip next to the track bed.

The Federal Police currently assume that the woman was then unable to stand up or draw attention to herself. As a result, she initially went unnoticed.

What is known about the time period – and what remains unclear

The sequence of events as described by the Federal Police is confirmed:

  • missed exit in Speyer
  • exit in Römerberg-Berghausen
  • attempt to walk back along the tracks
  • fall into the green strip
  • discovery by a train driver just after 6 a.m.

Exactly how long the senior lay there cannot be clearly determined from the information confirmed so far. Regional reports mention an emergency lasting many hours; however, the Federal Police have not finally confirmed an exact time span in the available information.

Dangerous area: Why help often comes too late

The case shows how quickly a situation in the track area can become life-threatening – not only because of passing trains, but also because people off the paths in embankments or green strips can easily be overlooked. Those who fall, are injured, or can no longer get up often have little chance of being noticed by passersby there.

Authorities regularly point out that entering track facilities is prohibited and highly risky. In an emergency, the rule is: keep away from the tracks and immediately call for help via the emergency number – instead of trying to "shortcut" along the route on foot.
