Albie Donnelly & his BIG 4 bring Blues energy to Ella & Louis
On Saturday, October 24, 2026, Ella & Louis in Mannheim will be transformed into a club for powerful Blues, Jazz, and Soul. Albie Donnelly & his BIG 4 will present the program Mr. Supercharge Blues Time starting at 8 PM – featuring a distinctive voice, expressive saxophone, and a band composition that closely intertwines groove and joy of playing.
Rough vocals, bright saxophone
Albie Donnelly hails from Liverpool and is one of the defining voices of European Rhythm and Blues. As a saxophonist, singer, and bandleader, he initially worked in London as a session musician, among others with Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats. In 1973, he founded Supercharge and developed an energetic blend of Blues, Soul, Swing, and Good-Time-Rock-and-Roll.
His sound thrives on contrast: rough Blues vocals meet soulful saxophone lines, precise synchronization meets spontaneous stage performance. Stylistically, Donnelly refers to greats like Junior Walker and King Curtis, but remains unmistakably British – with humor, presence, and a direct connection to the audience.
Blues, Jazz, and Soul in club atmosphere
With his Big-4 project, Donnelly brings this musical signature into the intimate atmosphere of Ella & Louis. The lineup includes Albie Donnelly on vocals and saxophone, André Tolba on guitar and vocals, Wolfgang Bolle Diekmann on bass, and Uwe Petersen on drums.
The four musicians create space for a powerful band sound: the drums drive, the bass lays the foundation, the guitar sets sharp accents, and Donnelly's saxophone leads through bluesy themes, soulful twists, and improvised passages. Thus, a concert experience emerges that combines intimacy, dynamism, and musical precision.
A career between London, Europe, and the Blues stage
Donnelly's musical history ranges from early studio work to international tours with Supercharge. The band performed alongside legends like Chuck Berry, B. B. King, and Queen and played for large audiences in London's Hyde Park. Numerous releases document Donnelly's connection between Rhythm and Blues, Funk, Soul, and Rock and Roll.
The discography also spans a wide arc: well-known milestones include Local Lads Make Good, Supercharge, Horizontal Refreshment, Live And Loaded, and Get Hip. For the album Local Lads Make Good, Donnelly received a Silver IMPALA Award in 2018.
Conclusion: Blues classics with live turbulence
The audience can expect a concentrated club concert at Ella & Louis with driving groove, character-laden saxophone, and the unmistakable stage energy of Albie Donnelly. Those who want to experience Blues, Jazz, and Soul not just by listening but in an immediate live atmosphere should not miss this evening in Mannheim.
