When Schiller's Beauty Leads to Freedom

A special evening of acting, music, and philosophical thought awaits the audience on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the Old Cinema Franklin in Mannheim. As part of the Enjoy Jazz Festival, August Zirner, Katalin Zsigmondy, and violist Hariolf Schlichtig come together in a specially developed stage format exploring the interplay between beauty and freedom.

Schiller's Thoughts Come to Life

Texts, musical improvisations, and small scenes revolve around central ideas from Friedrich Schiller's philosophical and aesthetic writings. The event combines classic literature with contemporary stage performance and creates an open dialogue between language, sound, and movement.

Between Acting, Flute, and Viola

August Zirner brings his long-standing experience as an actor and flutist. The Grimme Prize winner has appeared in around 150 films and played, among others, the Marquis of Posa in Schiller's Don Carlos as well as King Philip. Katalin Zsigmondy has performed on renowned stages in Germany and Switzerland, including embodying the Maid of Orleans at the State Theatre Hanover. Both artists regularly collaborate in readings.

Hariolf Schlichtig provides the musical color on the viola. The internationally renowned chamber musician was a founding member of the Cherubini Quartet, is a soloist and section leader of the Cappella Andrea Barca, and a professor for viola and chamber music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. His improvisations give the texts a second layer: sometimes reserved and breathing, sometimes dense and tense.

Young Voices Meet Stage Experience

The trio is supported by Selina Schöneberger, Mathis Joa Braun, and Valentin Thier, three students from the Academy of Performing Arts Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg. Schöneberger has engaged intensively with Schiller's William Tell, while Thier's short film No. 5 was awarded at the YOUKI 14 Film Festival.

An Enjoy Jazz Evening Beyond Fixed Boundaries

The format is part of the Enjoy Jazz Festival 2026 and focuses on Beauty. In the seated Old Cinema Franklin, the concentrated live atmosphere of a theater evening meets the openness of musical improvisation. Acoustics, language, light, and stage presence combine to create a concert experience that is not limited to a single genre.

Conclusion: Beauty as a Shared Sound Space

Those who want to experience literature, acting, and improvised music in an unusual combination will find a precisely composed yet open stage event in this evening. Experience August Zirner, Katalin Zsigmondy, and Hariolf Schlichtig live in Mannheim and discover how Schiller's thoughts generate a contemporary dialogue on freedom.
