Verdi's Simon Boccanegra: An Evening Between Power, Loss, and Hope
On October 20, 2026, the National Theater Mannheim invites you to the introduction soirée followed by a rehearsal visit of Giuseppe Verdi's Simon Boccanegra at OPAL. The evening begins at 6:30 PM and offers a glimpse into an opera where political responsibility and personal happiness are inextricably linked.
A Family Drama with Political Explosiveness
At the center is the corsair Simon Boccanegra, who is proclaimed Doge of Genoa while simultaneously learning of the death of his beloved Maria. His political career was initially meant to help overcome the resistance of her father Fiesco. Instead, a story of loss, guilt, betrayal, and the desperate search for the lost daughter unfolds.
Experience Verdi's Dark Sound World Up Close
Verdi's final work combines dramatic orchestration with compelling voices and a musical tension that oscillates between power, grief, and longing. The introduction soirée provides insights into the production before the rehearsal visit offers glimpses into stage performance, directorial work, and musical synchronization.
OPAL as a Stage for a Major Operatic Theme
The production by Yona Kim portrays Simon Boccanegra as an engaging family drama. The musical direction is by Roberto Rizzi Brignoli and Luka Hauser. The National Theater Orchestra, the opera choir, the extra choir, and the cast of the National Theater contribute to the production with a multifaceted sound language.
The opera is performed in Italian with German and English surtitles. The focus is on a ruler caught between office and humanity, a family under the pressure of political conflicts, and Verdi's insatiable longing for peace and forgiveness.
Conclusion: An Exclusive Look Behind the Scenes of the Opera
The introduction soirée with the rehearsal visit combines understanding of the work with a live atmosphere. Those who wish to not only hear Verdi's musical theater but also experience its creation at OPAL will gain special access to Simon Boccanegra that evening.
