With the exhibition RADICAL. REAL. Nouveau Realism and the Art of the 1960s, the Kunsthalle Mannheim dedicates a comprehensive special exhibition to one of the most influential art movements of the post-war period. From September 24, 2026, a multifaceted art experience unfolds around found materials, consumer objects, body images, and the aesthetic explosive power of everyday life.
A Radical Response to Art History
Nouveau Realism emerged around 1960 in the context of the French art critic Pierre Restany. Artists sought new visual languages beyond Informel and abstract expressionism. No longer solely painting and classical sculpture were in focus: waste, poster remnants, metal, everyday objects, and industrial materials became carriers of an immediate reality.
The exhibition for the first time outlines a comprehensive, multipolar, and global cartography of the movement. Its epicenter was in Paris, but its impulses extended far beyond to Europe, Latin America, and the USA. The curation traces developments from the post-war period to the early 1970s.
Found Objects, Strong Bodies, New Materials
Highlights include outstanding works by Arman, César, Yves Klein, Mimmo Rotella, Daniel Spoerri, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Jacques de la Villeglé.
