RADICAL. REAL.: When reality itself became the material of art

The Kunsthalle Mannheim presents RADICAL. REAL. Nouveau Realism and the Art of the 1960s, the largest special exhibition on Nouveau Realism in Germany in more than fifteen years. Around 150 works unfold a dense panorama of that art that transformed everyday objects, consumer traces, body images, and urban fragments into radical visual languages.

An art experience between object, body, and consumer society

The exhibition takes you to an era of social upheaval: From the 1950s to the early 1970s, consumer society fundamentally changed everyday life as well as art. Artists no longer made reality just the subject of representation, but the immediate material of their work. Found objects, scrap, remnants of posters, industrial materials, and media fragments testify to an accelerated present in the exhibition space.

The global cartography of Nouveau Realism

At the center is the movement formulated in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany, with its epicenter in Paris. However, the curatorial concept expands the view beyond the classic group history and shows international connections to Europe, Latin America, and the USA. Works by Arman, César, Yves Klein, Mimmo Rotella, Daniel Spoerri, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jacques de la Villeglé, Christo, and Jean Tinguely illustrate the diversity of this art movement.

Complementary positions by Alina Szapocznikow, Jasper Johns, Tetsumi Kudo, Chryssa, and Feliza Bursztyn enter into dialogue. This creates a multi-voiced art historical perspective on new forms of seeing, collecting, disassembling, and arranging.

Painting, sculpture, and installation in dialogue

The consideration of the works moves between painting, sculpture, installation, assemblage, object art, and works on paper. Photographs as well as film and video documents of performances and actions expand the exhibition with the dimension of the ephemeral. Materials, surfaces, and traces of use create an immediate exhibition atmosphere in which the aesthetic experience connects with questions about consumption, public space, body, and environment.

Especially striking is the tension between destruction and rebirth: Compressed automobiles, industrial remains, torn posters, and staged everyday objects transform into sculptures and image spaces. The works preserve the vulnerability of their materials and develop a strong visual presence precisely from that.

Why this art remains relevant today

RADICAL. REAL. showcases art whose questions extend far beyond the 1960s. How do goods, media, and industrial production shape our perception? When does an object become a work of art? And what societal traces remain visible in everyday objects? The exhibition thus opens a reflective access to the art history of the post-war period and cultural education.

A supplementary exhibition catalog from Wienand Verlag deepens the art historical classification. The supporting program of the Kunsthalle Mannheim complements the exhibition with further events addressing reality, materiality, and the radical ideas of the 1960s.

Conclusion: Seeing reality with new eyes

Visitors can expect an intense art experience between historical research, sensual engagement with the works, and current societal analysis. RADICAL. REAL. makes visible how from garbage, bodies, consumer objects, and urban traces arose an equally contradictory and powerful aesthetics. Those who want to experience the dynamics of Nouveau Realism live and question the borders between art and everyday life should not miss this exhibition at the Kunsthalle Mannheim.
