STOLPERSTEINE for Mannheim: Remembering in Public Space
On October 15, 2026, the MARCHIVUM in Mannheim invites you to engage with the art and remembrance project STOLPERSTEINE. Between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, a decentralized memorial is the focus, bringing the names, biographies, and fates of persecuted people back into the urban space.
An Art Memorial by Gunter Demnig
STOLPERSTEINE is a project of the Cologne artist and sculptor Gunter Demnig. The small concrete blocks with individually inscribed brass plates are embedded in the pavement at ground level – in front of the last freely chosen residences or workplaces of people who were persecuted during the National Socialist regime. From the everyday movement through the city, a silent contemplation of the work arises: A look down opens access to a specific life story.
Biographies Instead of Anonymous Numbers
The inscriptions commemorate Jews, Sinti and Roma, politically persecuted individuals, homosexuals, forced laborers, people with disabilities, and other victims of National Socialist persecution. In Mannheim, more than 350 STOLPERSTEINE now commemorate citizens who were deprived of their rights, arrested, deported, murdered, or driven to suicide – as well as those who survived NS terror.
Aesthetic Experience and Cultural Education
The impact of the project arises from the contrast between the unremarkable material of the pavement and the shiny surface of the brass plate. Light, weather, and wear modify the perception of the stones. This special exhibition atmosphere does not require a museum distance but makes remembrance tangible in everyday life. The project connects installation, conceptual art, urban history, and cultural education and invites people to link historical sources with today’s living environment.
From Trail-Laying to a Global Remembrance Project
Demnig's artistic work has revolved around public spaces, materials, and visible traces since the 1960s. Earlier actions, installations, and works involving wax, wood, ceramics, and sound were important stages on the path to the art project STOLPERSTEINE. Since the 1990s, it has developed into the largest decentralized memorial in the world. The project combines artistic curation with local research and civic engagement.
City History in Mannheim
The MARCHIVUM, as an archive, house of city history, and place of remembrance, offers an appropriate setting for dealing with the Mannheim biographies. The STOLPERSTEINE lead out of the building into the streets of the city: They make it visible that history does not lie completed behind archive walls but continues to resonate at residential buildings, squares, and familiar paths.
Conclusion: An Artistic Experience Against Forgetting
Visitors can expect a compelling connection of art, memory culture, and local history. Those who engage with the contemplation of the STOLPERSTEINE encounter not just an art project but individual people and their life paths. The MARCHIVUM creates a space for reflection, historical responsibility, and a lasting aesthetic experience on October 15, 2026. A visit enriches cultural education and sets a personal sign against forgetting.
