When Plants Learn to See: STUDIO at the Kunsthalle Mannheim
How do blossoms perceive light, how do they react to their environment, and what does this silent sensitivity tell us about our future? The exhibition STUDIO: Rasa Smite & Raitis Smits transforms scientific insights into an immersive art experience between virtual reality, projection, and ecological perception.
Solarceptors: A New Perspective on the Living
At the center is Solarceptors, a media art work by the Latvian artist duo Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits. The artists, who work in Basel and Riga and are among the defining voices at the intersection of art, science, and technology, focus on plants as sensitive beings. Light, reaction, and planetary rhythms are not merely explained, but are made directly tangible as an aesthetic experience.
Virtual Reality, Projection, and Ecological Perception
The virtual reality installation and the accompanying projection open a space beyond the familiar anthropocentric perspective. Colors, digital images, and immersive spatial effects shift the usual consideration of the work: plants appear not as a decorative natural backdrop, but as independent actors with complex relationships to their surroundings.
The exhibition connects installation, media art, and artistic research. In this art form, technological processes are not used as an end in themselves, but as tools for a more precise perception of biological processes. The exhibition atmosphere arises from the interplay of light, projection, data, and physical presence.
Art, Research, and Future in the STUDIO
Curated by Julia-Katharina Thiemann with curatorial assistance from Alessia Tardivo, the presentation is part of the anniversary program Imagine Futures! of the 75th International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg. The cooperation links contemporary art with cultural education and poses a central question: How does our thinking change when humans no longer constitute the scale for perception and life?
Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits have been working for years to connect media art, ecology, and technological presence. Their immersive practice invites us to understand the future not just as a mere technical vision, but as a changed relationship with the environment. Thus, an exhibition is created that connects sensory experience, scientific curiosity, and art historical reflection.
An Art Experience for Curious Minds
The visit is aimed at art enthusiasts, families, students, and anyone interested in virtual reality, environmental issues, and new forms of exhibition design. The focused presentation is suitable for intense artwork contemplation as well as for a first access to media art. Those who engage with the installation experience a quiet, visually strong, and intellectually far-reaching encounter with light, plants, and the future.
STUDIO: Rasa Smite & Raitis Smits awaits visitors as an atmospheric installation at the border of artwork, research, and sensory perception. The exhibition at the Kunsthalle Mannheim sharpens the view of the seemingly familiar and enriches every aesthetic experience with a surprising ecological dimension. A visit is worthwhile for all who want to not only observe art but experience it with altered senses.
