Solarceptors: When plants become perceiving entities

How do flowers perceive light? And what does their silent relationship with the environment reveal about our future? At the STUDIO of the Kunsthalle Mannheim, Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits transform scientific insights into an immersive art experience. Their exhibition Solarceptors offers an unusual perspective on plants as sensitive beings and invites us to rethink familiar notions of life, perception, and technology.

Art between research, virtual reality, and ecology

The Latvian artists have been working since the 1990s at the intersection of art, science, and new media. In their installations, they combine digital technologies, ecological research, sound, and visual data. The exhibition in Mannheim impressively brings together this artistic practice in a virtual reality installation and an accompanying projection.

Visitors encounter plants up close: light is no longer experienced merely as illumination but as an essential condition for life. The viewing experience shifts the human perspective and allows for an aesthetic experience in which perception appears as a shared process between humans, plants, and the planet.

An immersive exhibition atmosphere

Colors, projections, spatial depth, and digital visual worlds create a sensually concentrated exhibition atmosphere. The installation leads into a world where botanical processes are not explained illustratively but designed as atmospheric and physically perceivable events. The boundaries between painting, installation, media art, and scientific visualization begin to consciously blur.

Solarceptors connects to the duo's earlier works such as Talk to Me, Biotricity, and Atmospheric Forest. These projects examine the relationships between plants, climate, energy, data, and technical systems. Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits translate complex ecological relationships into open visual, sound, and experiential spaces, thereby making an important contribution to cultural education.

Art historical contextualization and future perspective

The work exemplifies a contemporary art direction that does not merely depict scientific research but transforms it into an independent aesthetic language. As representatives of new media and art-and-science art, they combine their artistic practice with questions of climate research, technological transformation, and more-than-human perception.

The artist duo founded the RIXC Center for New Media Culture in Riga and has received, among others, the Prix Ars Electronica. Their works have been presented internationally in institutions such as the Ars Electronica Center, ZKM, HeK Basel, and the National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm. The curatorial supervision of the Mannheim presentation is handled by Julia-Katharina Thiemann, supported by Alessia Tardivo.

As part of Imagine Futures!

The exhibition is created in collaboration with the 75th International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg and is part of the anniversary program Imagine Futures!. In this way, the STUDIO of the Kunsthalle Mannheim connects contemporary media art with a cultural future debate: The future appears not only as a technological vision but as a new way of seeing, feeling, and understanding.

Conclusion: A change of perspective on the living

STUDIO: Rasa Smite & Raitis Smits promises an intense art experience between virtual reality, ecological research, and poetic installation. Those who visit the exhibition will experience plants not as a silent backdrop but as active partners in a planetary dialogue. The aesthetic experience at the Kunsthalle Mannheim raises new questions about perception, responsibility, and the forms of life. A visit is worthwhile for anyone who wants to experience contemporary art as a sensuous, exploratory, and forward-looking practice.
