A Love Story Against the Right-Wing Shift

On the roof of an occupied house, Eireni and Anna embark on a summer full of adventure, political idealism, and electrifying intimacy. However, as the two young women discover their love, people from their environment begin to disappear. From a seemingly carefree time, a dangerous suspicion grows.

Summer Heat and Societal Tension

Eve Leigh's play combines a queer coming-of-age narrative with a precise examination of racist violence and the new right-wing shift. A Senegalese tailor and a Turkish shopkeeper become victims of a reality trivialized by the authorities. Eireni and Anna refuse to accept this explanation and start to investigate themselves.

Between Love, Courage, and Political Action

Their trail leads them to the summer camp of a nationalistic movement. There, they must conceal their identities as the pressure continuously mounts. The dramaturgy raises a central question: What is needed to confront fascism – strategy, alliances, and trust, or courage, love, and zeal?

An Outstanding Contemporary Production

Theaterhaus G7 presents Salty Irina – Burned Land as the first German theater to stage this work. The production by Pascal Wieandt employs acting, sound, and video to create a theatrical atmosphere between summer openness and increasing threat. Set design, costume, lighting, and acoustics intensify the stage experience into a political chamber play with high emotional tension.

The author Eve Leigh was awarded the Nestroy Prize for Best Play in 2025 for Burned Land. The work was previously presented under the original title Salty Irina at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. A committed German-language stage adaptation about resistance, belonging, and the power of shared stance emerges in Mannheim.

Conclusion: Theater as Risk and Encounter

Salty Irina – Burned Land promises an intense theater evening with precise acting, political urgency, and a love story that asserts itself against the chill of the present. Those seeking contemporary productions, strong characters, and socially relevant acting will find a stage experience at Theaterhaus G7 that lingers long after the final applause.
