When Sound Meets Art: Alexander Tillegreen at the Kunsthalle Mannheim

The exhibition Pieces for Works by Danish artist and composer Alexander Brix Tillegreen transforms the Kunsthalle Mannheim into a resonance space for seeing, hearing, and spatial perception. From April 2, 2026, to January 10, 2027, ten site-specific sound installations encounter selected works from the museum collection.

A Museum as a Sensitive Instrument

Tillegreen's art examines how meaning changes when sound meets visual art and architecture. His autonomous compositions are distributed across various rooms in the Kunsthalle, engaging in a subtle dialogue with sculptures, works on paper, and paintings. The atmosphere of the exhibition is created not through spectacular effects, but through subtle acoustic shifts that transform attention and a sense of time.

Viewing Works Between Hearing and Seeing

As compositional starting points, Tillegreen selected works by Auguste Rodin, Rosemarie Trockel, László Moholy-Nagy, Anna Mahler, Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, Isa Genzken, Édouard Vuillard, and Louise Nevelson. He translates the forms, textures, rhythms, and material properties of these artworks into auditory structures. This expands the viewing of the works to a physically experiential dimension.

Psychoacoustics, Field Recordings, and Contemporary Composition

The sound works merge elements of contemporary classical music with psychoacoustic phenomena, field recordings, and experimental instrumentation. Some passages appear like distant traces in space, while others develop an immersive presence. Language, musical references, and performative sounds open suggestive layers of meaning that oscillate between memory, materiality, and abstraction.

Alexander Brix Tillegreen: Sound Art as Aesthetic Experience

Alexander Brix Tillegreen, born in 1991 in Taarbæk, Denmark, lives and works in Copenhagen and Berlin. His intermedial practice combines sound installation, composition, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Exhibitions and projects at the Museum Tinguely in Basel, CCA Glasgow, and MMK Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt situate his work within the international field of contemporary sound and media art.

Cultural Education Through Concentrated Perception

Pieces for Works invites visitors to traverse museum spaces more consciously and experience familiar artworks anew. The exhibition makes audible how architecture, distance, volume, and movement shape perception. This art experience connects art historical collections, contemporary composition, and aesthetic experience into an open form of cultural education.

Conclusion: An Exhibition That Makes Art Audible

Visitors can expect a quiet, intense, and unusual encounter with the collection of the Kunsthalle Mannheim. Those who engage with the sound zones discover painting, sculpture, and architecture from a new perspective. A visit to Pieces for Works enriches cultural perception and makes clear how closely seeing, hearing, and remembering are interconnected.
