When Art Begins to Sound: Alexander Tillegreen at the Kunsthalle Mannheim
The exhibition Pieces for Works by the Danish artist and composer Alexander Brix Tillegreen transforms the Kunsthalle Mannheim into a resonance space for seeing, hearing, and spatial perception. From April 2, 2026, to January 10, 2027, ten newly developed, site-specific sound works enter into an intense dialogue with selected works from the collection.
A Museum as a Resonance Space
Tillegreen explores how sound reacts to visual art and architecture, thereby creating new layers of meaning. Subtle acoustic interventions unfold among sculptures, works on paper, and paintings, distributed across different spaces of the Kunsthalle. Visitors encounter different sound zones – from barely perceivable acoustic shifts to immersive situations.
Seeing, Hearing, and Perceiving Differently
As compositional starting points, Tillegreen selected works by Auguste Rodin, Rosemarie Trockel, László Moholy-Nagy, Anna Mahler, Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, Isa Genzken, Édouard Vuillard, and Louise Nevelson. Texture, spatiality, rhythm, and layering are translated into auditory structures. This creates a reflection on the works, where painting, sculpture, installation, and architecture illuminate each other anew.
Sound Art Between Composition and Psychoacoustics
Alexander Brix Tillegreen, born in 1991 in Taarbæk, works between Copenhagen and Berlin. His artistic practice combines painting, printmaking, light, video, sculpture, composition, and sound installation. He studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York, as well as art history, musicology, and sound studies at the University of Copenhagen.
At the center of his work are psychoacoustic phenomena, auditory illusions, language, and the question of how meaning arises in the interplay of body, space, and memory. Contemporary classical music, field recordings, and experimental instrumentation combine into an art form that does not explain perception but activates it sensually.
Experiencing the Collection with New Ears
Pieces for Works expands the classic exhibition experience with a physically tangible dimension. The exhibition atmosphere changes with every step through the spaces: sounds emerge, disappear, and shift attention. The eye follows the artwork while the ear simultaneously registers architecture, distance, and movement.
This transforms the exhibition into an aesthetic experience and serves as an example of contemporary cultural education. Tillegreen's curation opens access to well-known positions in art history without solidifying them. Those who look slowly and listen attentively experience the collection as a living structure of material, time, space, and resonance.
Conclusion: A Sensory Art Experience for Curious Ears
Alexander Tillegreen's Pieces for Works connects sound art, collection, and architecture into a concentrated form of reflection on the works. The exhibition does not expect its audience with loud effects, but with subtle shifts, surprising resonances, and an intense perception of the museum space. Art enthusiasts should definitely experience this special connection of hearing and seeing live at the Kunsthalle Mannheim.
