When art begins to sound: Alexander Tillegreen at the Kunsthalle Mannheim

The exhibition Pieces for Works transforms the Kunsthalle Mannheim into a resonance space for seeing, hearing, and spatial perception. The Danish artist and composer Alexander Brix Tillegreen develops ten site-sensitive sound works that enter into direct dialogue with selected works from the museum's collection. This creates a multifaceted art experience in which painting, sculpture, works on paper, architecture, and music open new layers of meaning.

A museum as a resonance space

Tillegreen's sound installations do not appear as mere accompaniment to the exhibited artworks. They function as autonomous artistic works that subtly inscribe themselves into the exhibition atmosphere. Some acoustic interventions move at the threshold of perception, while others unfold as immersive sound spaces. Visitors experience how attention, sense of time, and spatial impact change through listening.

Dialogues between sound and collection

As compositional starting points, Tillegreen selected works by Auguste Rodin, Rosemarie Trockel, László Moholy-Nagy, Anna Mahler, Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, Isa Genzken, Édouard Vuillard, and Louise Nevelson. The sound works do not illustrate these pieces, but enter into an open relationship with their materiality, formal language, and spatial presence. Texture, rhythm, layering, and proportion are translated into acoustic structures.

Between painting, sculpture, and sound installation

Alexander Brix Tillegreen, born in 1991 in Taarbæk, works between Copenhagen and Berlin. His artistic practice combines painting, printmaking, sculpture, video, composition, and sound installation. Central themes include questions of perception, abstraction, and embodied listening. Psychoacoustic phenomena, voice, language, field recordings, and experimental instrumentations open up an art experience in which the visible and audible intertwine.

Aesthetic experience and cultural education

The exhibition invites focused contemplation of the works. Visitors alternate between visual analysis and physical listening, between the clear outline of a sculpture and the barely graspable movement of a sound. This shift broadens access to art and makes central themes of cultural education immediately tangible: How does meaning arise? How do space, memory, and language influence our perception? And when does a noise become music?

Context in contemporary art

Tillegreen studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York. Additionally, he studied art history, musicology, and sound studies at the University of Copenhagen. His works have been shown at the Museum Tinguely in Basel, the MMK Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt, the CCA Glasgow, and the National Gallery of Denmark, among others. In 2023, he presented new commissioned works at the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt and released his debut album In Words.

With the connection of sound, architecture, and visual art, Pieces for Works also ties into Mannheim's significance as a UNESCO City of Music. The Kunsthalle becomes a place of expanded perception, where collection and contemporary art, composition and exhibition curation enter into a lively exchange.

Conclusion: See, hear, and perceive art anew

The exhibition awaits visitors with a quiet, precise, and simultaneously sensually intense experience. Pieces for Works shows how sound can change the perspective on painting, sculpture, and space. Those who want to not only view contemporary art but physically experience it will find an extraordinary art experience between collection, composition, and aesthetic research at the Kunsthalle Mannheim.
