When Sound Sets Images in Motion
The exhibition Pieces for Works at the Kunsthalle Mannheim transforms the museum visit into a multifaceted art experience. The Danish artist and composer Alexander Brix Tillegreen develops ten site-specific sound installations that engage in an intense dialogue with selected works from the museum collection.
An Exhibition Between Listening and Seeing
Tillegreen's curatorial approach combines contemporary sound art with painting, sculpture, and works on paper. Works by Auguste Rodin, Rosemarie Trockel, László Moholy-Nagy, Anna Mahler, Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, Isa Genzken, Édouard Vuillard, and Louise Nevelson serve as compositional starting points. The sound works do not simply accompany these pieces but open new levels of perception between materiality, space, and time.
Sound Zones in the Museum
Spread across various rooms of the Kunsthalle, the installations appear as subtle acoustic interventions or as immersive sound fields. Visitors move through changing sound zones where attention, orientation, and memory take on new forms. Contemporary classical music, field recordings, psychoacoustic phenomena, and experimental instrumentation combine to create a finely-tuned exhibition atmosphere.
The Art of Conscious Listening
Alexander Tillegreen's artistic practice moves between sound installation, composition, painting, printmaking, light, and performance. At the core is the question of how perception generates meaning. Language, voice, and acoustic illusions become independent materials, while abstract forms and spatial relationships shift the boundary between the visible and the heard.
The artist, born in 1991 in Taarbæk, studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York, as well as art history, musicology, and sound studies at the University of Copenhagen. His works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt, the Tinguely Museum Basel, CCA Glasgow, and the National Gallery of Denmark, among others. In 2023, he presented new commissioned works for the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt and released his debut album In Words.
Aesthetic Experience and Cultural Education
Pieces for Works invites a concentrated contemplation of the works, activating multiple senses. Colors, forms, surfaces, and architecture relate to sound, rhythm, and silence. The exhibition thus expands the sensory field of the Kunsthalle Mannheim and is simultaneously situated in the cultural context of the UNESCO City of Music Mannheim.
Conclusion: A Museum as an Audible Think Space
This art experience is aimed at everyone who wishes to discover contemporary art from unusual perspectives. Pieces for Works makes it audible how images change when sound shapes their surroundings. A visit to the Kunsthalle Mannheim opens an intense aesthetic experience between collection, architecture, and experimental music.
