When art begins to resonate: Alexander Tillegreen at Kunsthalle Mannheim

With Pieces for Works, the Danish artist and composer Alexander Brix Tillegreen transforms selected artworks from Kunsthalle Mannheim into starting points for an intense aesthetic experience. The exhibition combines sound art, architecture, and visual arts into a sensually multilayered art experience, where seeing and hearing are inseparably intertwined.

An exhibition space between seeing and hearing

Alexander Tillegreen, born in 1991 in Taarbæk, Denmark, lives and works in Copenhagen and Berlin. His artistic practice spans sound installation, composition, painting, printmaking, sculpture, video, and performance. At its core is the question of how perception creates meaning and how sound can alter the contemplation of a work of art.

For the exhibition in Mannheim, Tillegreen developed ten new, site-sensitive sound works. They refer to selected pieces from the collection – from sculptures to works on paper to paintings – and engage in an open dialogue with them as independent artistic works.

Sound as a compositional engagement with the work

The compositions draw on elements of contemporary classical music, psychoacoustic phenomena, field recordings, and experimental instrumentations. Texture, spatiality, rhythm, and overlay of visual works are translated into auditory structures. Language, musical references, and performative sounds open up additional symbolic and connotative layers of meaning.

A vibraphone solo was created in response to the sculpture Yamasaki by Isa Genzken, with sound wrapping around the work like a moving architectural model. Louise Nevelson's monumental sculpture Vision One inspired a sound work constructed with various wooden circles, musically capturing the materiality and structure of the original.

From Rodin to Genzken: Experiencing the collection anew

The exhibition opens an unusual access to the collection of Kunsthalle Mannheim. Works by Auguste Rodin, Francis Bacon, Isa Genzken, and other artists appear not only as visual objects but as resonant spaces. Sound draws attention to proportions, gaps, surfaces, and movements that may be revealed differently in a purely visual contemplation.

Tillegreen's works slow down the encounter with art. Visitors can move around the works, linger on a museum stool, and experience the interplay of sound, spatial impact, light, and materiality from different perspectives. The exhibition transforms the contemplation of works into a physical and temporal experience.

Art Historical Context and Cultural Education

Tillegreen's interdisciplinary art direction connects to the history of sound art, conceptual art, and site-specific installation. His works transcend the boundaries between autonomous artwork, musical score, and museum presentation. He is not merely interested in the auditory representation of an image but in how visual and acoustic perception together generate new forms of understanding.

His education at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York, along with his studies in art history and sound studies in Copenhagen, shape this interdisciplinary approach. Since 2019, Tillegreen has also been conducting research in collaboration with scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics on perception, language, and sound.

Conclusion: An exhibition for eyes, ears, and imagination

Pieces for Works invites art enthusiasts to a concentrated art experience between collection, composition, and spatial perception. The exhibition expands the view on familiar artworks and makes audible how closely form, movement, memory, and atmosphere are interconnected. Those who wish to directly experience the aesthetic experience of sound art and visual art should take time for this special exhibition visit at Kunsthalle Mannheim.
