When Art Begins to Sound: Alexander Tillegreen at the Kunsthalle Mannheim
The exhibition Pieces for Works by the Danish artist and composer Alexander Brix Tillegreen transforms the Kunsthalle Mannheim into a resonance space for seeing, hearing, and spatial perception. From April 2, 2026, to January 10, 2027, ten newly developed, site-sensitive sound works enter into an independent dialogue with selected pieces from the museum collection.
A Museum as a Resonance Space
Tillegreen's sound installations do not merely accompany the artworks; they expand their perception space. Sculptures, paintings, and works on paper become compositional starting points where sound, architecture, movement, and memory connect. The exhibition invites focused contemplation of the works, where visual forms and acoustic structures illuminate each other.
Between Sound Art, Painting, and Sculpture
Alexander Brix Tillegreen, born in 1991 in Taarbæk, studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York. His interdisciplinary practice includes painting, printmaking, sculpture, video, installation, and composition. At its core are abstraction, language, psychoacoustic phenomena, and the question of how meaning arises through embodied listening.
Ten Sound Works in Dialogue with the Collection
For Mannheim, Tillegreen developed ten musical works related to selected pieces from artists including Auguste Rodin, Rosemarie Trockel, László Moholy-Nagy, Anna Mahler, Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, Isa Genzken, Édouard Vuillard, and Louise Nevelson. Electronic sounds, field recordings, and experimental instrumentations intertwine with the material qualities of the exhibits: texture, rhythm, spatiality, and layering are translated into audible forms.
Aesthetic Experience and Cultural Education
The exhibition slows down the museum visit and sharpens attention to details. Visitors move between sound zones, view familiar works from new perspectives, and experience how distance, spatial effect, and movement transform perception. This art experience connects contemporary composition with art historical collection and opens a sensual path to cultural education.
Conclusion: Seeing, Hearing, and Remembering Art Anew
Pieces for Works invites art enthusiasts to an intense encounter with sound art, collection, and architecture. The exhibition demonstrates that an artwork can not only be viewed but also experienced spatially, bodily, and acoustically. Those wishing to discover the Kunsthalle Mannheim as a vibrant resonance space will find an extraordinary aesthetic experience between contemporary art and musical research.
