Alexander Tillegreen: Sound Becomes Visual Art

The exhibition Pieces for Works at the Kunsthalle Mannheim invites you to an extraordinary artistic experience between sound, painting, sculpture, architecture, and perception. The Danish artist and composer Alexander Brix Tillegreen develops ten new, site-sensitive sound works that enter into an immediate dialogue with selected works from the Kunsthalle's collection.

When Images Become Resonance Spaces

Tillegreen understands artworks as compositional starting points. Sculptures, works on paper, and paintings are not merely viewed but acoustically rethought. Sound installations expand the spatial effect of the works and create an aesthetic experience in which seeing and hearing intertwine.

Historical and modern reference points include works by Auguste Rodin, Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, Isa Genzken, and Louise Nevelson. Their forms, surfaces, rhythms, and material tensions find a new, non-illustrative correspondence in the compositions.

An Exhibition for Active Listening

The atmosphere of the exhibition emerges from subtle layers of sound, spatial transitions, and conscious voids. Tillegreen's works move between contemporary classical music, psychoacoustic phenomena, field recordings, and experimental instrumentation. Language, voice, architecture, and the physical perception of space become artistic material.

At the center lies the question of how meaning arises: through what actually sounds, as well as through memories, expectations, and inner images. The contemplation of the works becomes a physical process. Visitors experience how perspectives shift and familiar artworks appear in a new sonic environment.

Alexander Tillegreen Between Art, Music, and Research

Alexander Brix Tillegreen, born in 1991 in Taarbæk, Denmark, lives and works in Copenhagen and Berlin. He studied Fine Arts at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York and art history, musicology, and sound studies at the University of Copenhagen. In 2017, he completed his master's student program at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main.

His interdisciplinary practice encompasses sound installations, compositions, painting, printmaking, light, sculpture, and performances. In his artistic research, he deals with psychoacoustics, auditory illusions, language, and embodied listening. International exhibitions and performances have taken him to various venues, including the Tinguely Museum in Basel, CCA Glasgow, MMK Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt, and the National Gallery of Denmark.

Sound Art in the Museum of Contemporary Art

Pieces for Works expands the sensory field of the Kunsthalle Mannheim. The curation connects the history of the collection with contemporary sound art and makes it possible to experience how pictorial forms can be newly read through acoustic spaces. Thus, the exhibition is also situated within the cultural context of Mannheim as a UNESCO City of Music.

The artistic experience is aimed at art enthusiasts, music lovers, and anyone willing to engage in an open form of perception. The exhibition connects cultural education with direct sensory experience and opens up an unusual access to the collection.

Conclusion: See, Hear, Re-perceive

Alexander Tillegreen's Pieces for Works transforms the Kunsthalle Mannheim into a resonance space between past and present. Visitors can expect a concentrated encounter with sound installations, collection art, and architectural spatial effects. Those wanting to experience the boundaries between visual art and music should definitely visit this exhibition live.
