When art begins to sound: Alexander Tillegreen at the Kunsthalle Mannheim
The exhibition Pieces for Works by Danish artist and composer Alexander Brix Tillegreen transforms the Kunsthalle Mannheim into a resonance space for seeing, hearing, and spatial perception. From April 2, 2026, to January 10, 2027, ten newly developed, location-sensitive sound works enter into an independent dialogue with selected pieces from the museum collection.
An art experience between sound and image
Tillegreen's artistic practice moves between painting, printmaking, sculpture, video, light, composition, and sound installation. In Mannheim, situations arise where sound does not merely appear as an accompaniment but exists as an autonomous artistic form alongside paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. The exhibition thus opens an aesthetic experience in which perception unfolds across multiple senses.
Selected works as compositional starting points
For the project, Tillegreen selected ten artworks from the collection of the Kunsthalle Mannheim as starting points for his compositions. These include works by Auguste Rodin, Rosemarie Trockel, László Moholy-Nagy, Anna Mahler, Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, Isa Genzken, Édouard Vuillard, and Louise Nevelson. Fine correspondences, formal shifts, and new layers of meaning arise between the exhibits and the sound installations.
The exhibition atmosphere as resonance space
The location-sensitive sound works incorporate architecture, spatial effects, and audience movement into the experience of the artworks. Electronic sounds and instrumental elements respond to the visual structure of the artworks without explaining them illustratively. This principle is particularly evident in the engagement with Louise Nevelson's monumental sculpture Vision One, whose constructive linguistic forms resonate in a specially developed sound work.
Between abstraction, psychoacoustics, and cultural education
Alexander Brix Tillegreen, born in 1991 in Taarbæk, studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York. In addition, he studied art history, musicology, and sound studies at the University of Copenhagen. His works examine how language, voice, psychoacoustics, and spatial hearing shape perception. The exhibition makes this research sensually tangible and invites a rediscovery of familiar artworks with a slowed-down gaze and attentive ears.
A museum in the sign of the music city of Mannheim
By connecting sound, architecture, and visual arts, Pieces for Works expands the sensory field of the Kunsthalle. The project is simultaneously situated within the cultural context of Mannheim as a UNESCO City of Music. Visitors encounter a curation that does not present collection art in isolation but sets it in motion through contemporary compositions.
Conclusion: See, hear, and perceive differently
Alexander Tillegreen's Pieces for Works offers a concentrated art experience between installation, composition, and collection. The exhibition opens new access to painting, sculpture, and space and provides an unusual temporal depth to the appreciation of the works. Art enthusiasts should definitely experience the sound installations on-site, as their impact arises from the interplay of body, space, light, material, and hearing.
