An immersive journey into plant perception

STUDIO: Rasa Smite & Raitis Smits is an immersive installation at the Kunsthalle Mannheim. The work addresses the question of how plants perceive light and respond to their environment. It combines virtual reality with projections and opens an artistic approach to plant perception.

Plants, Light, and Perception

At the center of the installation is the relationship between plants and their environment. Light is not only a requirement for growth for plants but also a stimulus to which they respond. The work of Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits starts from these special perceptual processes and translates them into an immersive audiovisual experience.

Through the use of Virtual Reality and projection, a space is created where scientific questions, digital image worlds, and artistic observations converge. The audience can engage in an experience that expands familiar notions of perception and draws attention to the often-invisible reactions of plant life.

Part of Imagine Futures

The installation will be presented at the Kunsthalle Mannheim as part of the program Imagine Futures. The title of the program refers to an exploration of possible futures. The work of Smite and Smits adds the perspective of non-human organisms and encourages a reevaluation of the relationships between humans, plants, technology, and the environment.

The event is aimed at anyone interested in contemporary art, digital media, and ecological issues. Instead of a classic exhibition situation, the audience can expect a fusion of projection and virtual reality. The installation invites participants to engage in a special form of perception and to view plants not just as part of the landscape but as living beings with their own reactions to their surroundings.

STUDIO: Rasa Smite & Raitis Smits will be on view on November 14, 2026, at the Kunsthalle Mannheim. Information about the start time, ticket prices, opening hours, and other organizational details is not provided in this event announcement.
