Italian cinema between family chaos, big dreams, and subtle undertones

With Life as an Adult – La vita da grandi, the film series Cinema Italia! brings contemporary Italian cinema to Mannheim's Cinema Quadrat on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. The screening starts at 7:30 PM and presents Greta Scarano's 2025 drama in its original Italian version with German subtitles.

A return to Rimini that changes everything

Irene tries to build a new life in Rome. When her overwhelmed mother asks her to return to her hometown Rimini to take care of her 40-year-old autistic brother Omar, her daily routine gets out of balance. Omar has clear goals: He wants to get married, have three children, and perform as a rap star on the popular talent show Yes You Can.

Amid family responsibilities, self-determination, and the desire for recognition, an emotional film unfolds about siblings, growing up, and the question of how a shared life can succeed. Greta Scarano's direction combines personal closeness with a humorous perspective on the large and small challenges of family life.

Cinema Italia! as a cinematic multi-day experience

From October 23 to 28, 2026, Cinema Quadrat will once again dedicate its program to contemporary Italian cinema. Five productions from and about Italy will bring different perspectives, languages, and living worlds to the screen. The festival format creates a concentrated atmosphere for cinephiles, curious moviegoers, and the Italian-German cultural community in Mannheim.

Film art in the historic Cinema Quadrat

Cinema Quadrat was founded in 1971 and is one of the oldest municipal cinemas in Germany. The non-profit association stands for carefully curated film art beyond the mainstream, original versions with subtitles, and events with introductions, discussions, and cultural exchange. In the accessible hall with 110 seats, historical cinema culture meets modern projection technology and clearly defined programming.

An evening for film fans and Italy enthusiasts

The screening connects European film art with a touching family story. The audience and film share an evening where not spectacular effects, but characters, dialogues, and human closeness take center stage. Those who appreciate Italian cinema, social issues, and finely observed characters will experience a concentrated festival evening in the heart of Mannheim.
