When art begins to sound: Alexander Tillegreen at the Kunsthalle Mannheim

The exhibition Pieces for Works transforms the Kunsthalle Mannheim into a resonance space for seeing, hearing, and spatial perception. The Danish artist and composer Alexander Brix Tillegreen creates site-sensitive sound works that enter into a direct dialogue with selected pieces from the museum collection. This creates an art experience where painting, sculpture, architecture, and music open new layers of meaning.

An exhibition space between image and sound

Tillegreen's artistic practice moves between painting, printmaking, sculpture, light, video, composition, and sound installation. Central to it is the question of how perception arises and how meaning shifts between the visible, the audible, and the physically experienced.

Nine new pieces were created for the Mannheim exhibition, connected as sound installations with works from the Kunsthalle's collection. Artistic reference points include works by Francis Bacon, Auguste Rodin, Isa Genzken, Rosemarie Trockel, László Moholy-Nagy, Edvard Munch, Louise Nevelson, and Édouard Vuillard.

Aesthetic experience and psychoacoustic perception

The atmosphere of the exhibition is not created by a mere musical accompaniment to the artworks. Rather, Tillegreen uses sound as an independent curatorial and compositional material. Visitors move through a spatial composition where speakers, architecture, visual forms, and their own attention interact with each other.

His works address psychoacoustic phenomena, speech perception, and auditory illusions. Sound does not appear as a fixed message but as an open process: what is heard changes with the location, concentration, and personal memory. This viewing of the works connects sensory experience with art historical reflection.

From Städelschule to international sound art

Alexander Brix Tillegreen, born in 1991 in Denmark, studied Fine Arts at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York as well as art history, musicology, and sound studies at the University of Copenhagen. In 2017, he completed his master's studies at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main.

His works have been presented in international institutions and exhibition spaces, including the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt, the Tinguely Museum in Basel, the Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen, and the National Gallery of Denmark. His artistic research connects visual abstraction, electronic music, spatial sound installation, and the conditions of human perception.

Compositions in dialogue with the collection

The exhibition makes audible how an artwork can resonate beyond its visible form. Timbres, pauses, resonances, and spatial movements open new avenues to sculptures and paintings. Visitors do not experience a linear guide through a genre or era of art, but a multifaceted encounter between collection, contemporary art, and musical form.

Thus, Pieces for Works also holds a special significance for cultural education. The exhibition sharpens attention to materiality, spatial effect, light, body, and time. It invites visitors to reconsider familiar works in the Kunsthalle from an unfamiliar acoustic perspective.

Conclusion: An exhibition for eyes, ears, and imagination

Alexander Tillegreen's Pieces for Works promises an intense aesthetic experience between sound art, painting, sculpture, and museum space. Those who wish to experience the Kunsthalle Mannheim as a place of concentrated perception will discover an exhibition that sustainably connects seeing and hearing. The visit opens new perspectives on the collection and makes personal perception an active part of the art experience.
