When Art Begins to Sound: Alexander Tillegreen at the Kunsthalle Mannheim
The exhibition Pieces for Works by Danish artist and composer Alexander Brix Tillegreen transforms the Kunsthalle Mannheim into a resonance space for seeing, hearing, and spatial perception. Ten newly developed, site-specific sound works engage in direct dialogue with selected works from the museum collection.
A Dialogue Between Sound and Visual Art
Tillegreen selected works from Auguste Rodin, Rosemarie Trockel, László Moholy-Nagy, Anna Mahler, Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, Isa Genzken, Édouard Vuillard, and Louise Nevelson as compositional starting points. Sculptures, works on paper, and paintings thereby gain an additional acoustic dimension.
The sound installations are spread across different rooms of the Kunsthalle. Visitors encounter them in various sound zones: partly barely perceptible at the threshold of hearing, partly as immersive works that directly involve architecture, movement, and attention.
Psychoacoustics, Field Recordings, and New Perception
Tillegreen's artistic practice moves between sound installation, painting, printmaking, light, video, sculpture, and composition. His sound works incorporate elements of contemporary classical music, psychoacoustic phenomena, field recordings, and experimental instrumentation.
Texture, spatiality, rhythm, and layering are translated into auditory structures. Language and musical references open symbolic and connotative levels. The consideration of the works expands into an aesthetic experience, where not only the gaze but also one's body and personal hearing perception become active.
Alexander Tillegreen: Art Between Research and Composition
Alexander Brix Tillegreen, born in 1991 in Taarbæk, Denmark, studied visual arts at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York as well as art history, musicology, and sound studies at the University of Copenhagen. In 2017, he completed his master's degree at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main.
His works have been presented at the MMK Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt, the Tinguely Museum in Basel, CCA Glasgow, the Nikolaj Kunsthal Copenhagen, and at international festivals for contemporary music and sound art. The focus of his work includes perception, abstraction, psychoacoustic processes, and the question of how listening generates meaning.
The Kunsthalle as an Accessible Sound Body
Pieces for Works combines curation, collection, and contemporary sound art into a multifaceted art experience. The architecture of the Kunsthalle is not merely an exhibition framework but becomes a resonating body itself. Each room alters the impact of the compositions, while one's movement creates new acoustic relationships.
The project is also positioned within the cultural context of Mannheim as a UNESCO City of Music. It invites visitors to reconsider familiar artworks with sharpened attention and consciously perceive the transitions between image, space, material, and sound.
Conclusion: An Exhibition for Eyes, Ears, and Imagination
At the Kunsthalle Mannheim, art enthusiasts can expect a concentrated exhibition atmosphere between collection, installation, and composition. Alexander Tillegreen's works open an unusual access to art history and make perception itself the subject of the exhibition. Anyone wishing to experience painting, sculpture, and sound art in an immediately tangible connection should visit this special art experience live.
